You may recall, back in the month of May, I had an encounter with a dead-beat employer, a person who gave me a pay cheque that bounced, and then refused to pay after the fact. Well, yesterday, an envelope was sitting in my mailbox, sent from Court Service in Surrey, BC, containing the full amount, plus court costs, that they owed me. I was happy!
So, a little advice for those of you who get screwed by your employers, i.e not getting paid. Go to small claims court. Under the Labour Standards Act (of British Columbia), you must get a judge to grant you those powers of recovering your money, and the Act sets the authority for the Court to take the money from the sleaze bag. But first you must prove that you were in fact working and never got paid. In my case, the bounced cheque was all the proof I needed because of the deductions and the over drawn bank account. It is a very fast, no pity, system: you will see results. I think more people need to know about this–so spread the word!
