I turned on the radio this morning to hear the news that June Callwood had past away today. I have never had the privilege to meet her, or follow in her foot steps, but during college I worked on projects that were heavily influenced by her and the social movements that she started. She was a writer and an activists who stood for the underclass, the undefended and the unrepresented. Although I only knew of her in the last couple years, recently in terms of her life and effort, she did touch me deeply with her words and the ideology that she stood for. When I read the phrase “Canada’s social conscience” that described her in the media, that statement certainly sums it up in my mind because she did add to my conscience and she has shown me that our social standard still needs to evolve and grow. June Callwood passed away at 82.
